Week 6 has passed us by and I’ll be upfront with everyone, I caught a minimal amount of football action over the weekend. My Saturday was fairly preoccupied and about the only thing I caught was the big time win for my beloved Cyclones over Oklahoma and then the ending of the MSU-Michigan game that took place in a monsoon. So I hope everyone else’s teams had a wonderful week and stumbled out with a win. Let’s go ahead and dive into this week’s feature!
This is a fairly simple idea, but also allows a good amount of customization for each person depending on their preference. This is a small twist on a traditional red beer and a bit of a combination with a Bloody Mary. It’s a nice way to kick off a Saturday morning with a little flavor while still enjoying a nice cold beer. Saturday gets a decent kick off with TCU heading to Manhattan, KS, to take on the Fightin’ Bill Snyder’s. The line has moved to TCU -6, but opened as a pick’em. This has potential to be a pretty interesting shootout for the morning!
What You’ll Need: Your favorite Mexican beer (Corona, Modelo, Pacifico, etc.), hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, lime juice, tomato juice or variation (V8, Clamato, etc.)
In a pint glass, fill about 1/3 full with ice. The next couple steps are completely up to you depending on your own tastebuds, but I’ll give a quick outline of my process. Add in a couple shakes of pepper, 2-3 dashes of hot sauce (Tabasco is usually my choice), a splash of tomato juice (I enjoy spicy V8), a splash of lime juice and a shake of Worcestershire sauce. Give this mix a few stirs until everything seems to be blended together. Finally, top off the rest of the glass with beer and enjoy!
The afternoon matchups aren’t too bad this week. While there aren’t any ranked matchups, there’s a lot of potential for games that may come down to the very end. Purdue looks to continue their success this season heading into Madison to battle the Badgers, the Red River Rivalry features 2 teams that have had 2 very different outcomes against Iowa State in the last 17 days and Georgia Tech heads to The Sunshine State to take on Miami. Being a Big XII guy, my focus falls mostly on the Red River Shootout, and to me that just sounds like whiskey to me!
What You’ll Need: Whiskey or bourbon (original recipe calls for Maker’s Mark, but if you prefer another brand, feel free), Soda water, Cranberry juice, Lime wedge for garnish
Fill your tailgating glass of choice with ice. Add in 1 shot (1-1 1/2 oz) of whiskey. Top off with soda water and a nice splash of cranberry juice. Finish with a lime wedge for garnish.
The night games aren’t necessarily built to be blowouts, but I’m not sure how interesting they’ll be for a casual fan. Michigan State is now ranked and headed to take on PJ Fleck and Minnesota which could be a great time, or super boring. The game that caught my eye is Boise State heading to take on San Diego State. Especially with a 9:30 Central kick, there’s a good amount of time to see how the other night games are shaking out before you click on over to this matchup.
What You’ll Need: Whipped vodka, Cherry vodka, Sour mix, Cola
Fill your glass with ice and add 1/2 shot (3/4 oz.) of both Whipped and Cherry vodka. Top off with sour mix and add in a splash of cola at the top. Give a good stir and garnish with a lemon or cherry!
Tailgate Beer of the Week!
This week we’ll feature an American classic! Pabst Blue Ribbon is known all around the country and there’s a lot of different opinions out there. There’s people that actually really enjoy it and don’t care what you think of them, while others absolutely hate it (some strictly on the basis of it’s “hipster beer”). I have no personal issue with PBR. It’s an ok beverage and falls into the “light enough to drink all afternoon” category. I feel like the only true way to drink PBR is from tallboy cans, because why not! (By the way, if you’ve ever been curious where the name comes from, it’s a little bit bizarre.)
That’s what I’ve got for everyone this week! As always, I hope we can all walk away with victories and drink in celebration, not to drown our sorrows. Have a blast and stay safe and we’ll meet again next week!
