The Miami Dolphins beat the Pittsburgh Steelers Sunday by a score of 30-15, and I couldn’t be more pissed about it. No, I am not a fan of the Steelers – I am a fan of the Miami Dolphins. Being a Cubs fan, I understand that in order for the Dolphins to get better they need to be up near the top of the draft. But every year the Dolphins win a game where they shouldn’t and the fans think to themselves this is the year they make the playoffs. They will be wrong. The Dolphins will finish 7-9, 8-8 or 9-7 and forever be stuck in the middle.
I don’t know why I am a Dolphins fan. Maybe I should change teams like Turncoat Tommy. I can’t think of a single moment that stands out to me. I think I become a fan because I loved watching Dan Marino throw the long ball. People forget how great Marino was because he never won a Super Bowl, or made it to the Big Game after his second year in the league. They also forget how Marino never had a good running back. I mean did Elway win two Super Bowls or did he play QB on the team that had Terrell Davis?
Every Sunday I sit down with my Sunday Ticket and watch the Dolphins play. Why do I do this to myself? I know they will never make the playoffs with the Devil coaching the Patriots in New England. They get close enough to tease me every couple of years though. In 2013 after beating the Pats 24-20 the Dolphins team simply had to beat the either the Jets or Bills and would have been in the playoffs. Those teams were a combined 14-18 and the Dolphins scored a combined 7 points over those two games. Why am I a Dolphins fan again?
I tell myself that I am a fan because if you survive the bad moments and years it makes the good years that much better. What if a better year never comes? I have flirted with other teams over the years. My mistresses have included the Titans, Ravens and currently I have an unhealthy relationship with the Arizona Cardinals. So why can’t I leave this abusive relationship I’m in? I think it is because I am loyal to a fault, and I know my friends will never let me truly enjoy victories that my new teams would win. So here I am watching a team that will forever be 8-8.
